The Historic Tybee Post Theater is located at the heart of the Fort Screven Historic District.
It sits on the north end of Tybee Island. Fort Screven was once home to a military base that was active from the Spanish-American War through the end of World War II. was in 1930 by the U.S. Army constructed the Post Theater as a movie house for the soldiers stationed at the Fort and was the highlight of recreational activities for the soldiers and their families and friends on the island. Built in red brick with white wooden cornices in a modest Greek revival style, the Fort Screven Theater, significantly, was one of the first theaters in the state equipped to show “talkies.”
Through the years, the Theater attracted such famous patrons as base commander Gen. George C. Marshall and his wife, future President Dwight Eisenhower and Savannah’s famed composer Johnny Mercer. Officers and their families had reserved seats on the three back rows.
The mission of the Friends of the Tybee Theater is to successfully operate the Tybee Post Theater as an integral part of our community. They strive to enhance the local cultural experience, encourages and attracts visitors and improves our quality of life.
They always need volunteers!
We can’t exist without our legion of wonderful volunteers! Hundreds have given us countless hours and lots of energy planning and working at special events. This includes the annual Tybee Polar Plunge and Tybee Wine Festival, both huge events that need dozens of volunteers!
And just this year, we added the Craft Brew Battle at the Beach. All those fundraising events will continue! And we hope you will continue to lend a hand.
And now that the Tybee Post Theater reopened, they need a slate of committed volunteers. They need help with productions, concessions, the box office and more. Please email completed form to info@tybeeposttheater.org or print and mail to Tybee Post Theater, P.O. Box 2356, Tybee Island, GA 31328.
