The fortunate of us can take off seven days of work at a time and leisurely explore our travel destinations.
The majority of us, however, are lucky to have a free weekend. This time crunch can be frustrating when visiting a new city, spending valuable time shuffling through guidebooks trying to find the most authentic eateries and attractions.
If you only have 24 hours in Savannah, put down the guidebook and follow these instructions to live like a local for a day.
Savannah Georgia has plenty of trolley and carriage companies that can escort you around the city in around an hour.
Or, if walking is more your style, begin at the intersection of Broughton and Bull. Follow Bull Street all the way down to Forsyth Park. On your way, pass a number of statues and landmarks including Chippewa Square. Don’t forget the spot where Forest Gump sat at the bus stop. (The bench is now in the Visitor’s Center).
The farmer’s market and many Savannah festivals take place at Forsyth Park. At the bottom of the park, grab a coffee at The Sentient Bean to refuel. Make your way to wait in line at the famed Mrs. Wilkes’ Boarding House. This is a family-style southern dining experience is a MUST.
You’ll need to walk off the fried chicken and 20-plus sides by shopping in the Downtown Design District. This area has become Savannah’s preeminent locale for unique shopping.Conveniently located in the center of the Historic District, it keeps its exclusivity by limiting itself to just over 20 stores which specialize in everything from fine linens, to local arts.
Finish your day with a cocktail overlooking the Savannah River at Rocks on the Roof.
The views are hard to beat. And of course, when you’re ready to eat, downtown Savannah is host to a variety of gourmet options. Try local favorites, the Crystal Beer Parlor or the Olde Pink House.
If you aren’t tired yet, there is a bar for every taste on River Street. But if you’re worn out, head to one of the Historic District’s unique hotels like The River Street Inn or Hotel Indigo and rest up after your whirlwind day in the Hostess City.
