Picture River Street without Rousakis Riverfront Plaza – it’s hard to imagine, right?
Since its dedication in 1977, this half-mile-long plaza has been giving visitors an unbeatable view of the historic buildings lining the street. And let’s not forget the incredible show of massive cargo ships gracefully sailing up the Savannah River. The Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, named after former mayor John P. Rousakis, is the heart of River Street. Mayor Rousakis played a major role in revitalizing the area and starting the process of cleaning up the Savannah River. Soak in the waterfront development and appreciate the converted warehouses that now house shops, restaurants, bars, and art galleries.
Before the Plaza came along, the waterfront was in disarray – full of weeds, boulders, and crumbling wharves. There were barely any businesses in the area, and they even considered turning the plaza into a giant parking lot.
But thanks to some federal funds and a contribution from the city, the project finally got the green light. Savannah received a generous $4.3 million for urban renewal, and the city chipped in an additional $3 million – making a grand total of $7.3 million. Now, the plaza stands as a symbol of progress and revitalization.
Rousakis Riverfront Plaza is where all the action happens in Savannah.
From festivals and celebrations to antique shops and art galleries, there’s something going on at the Plaza. Don’t miss out on the incredible Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza or the famous Wiener Dog Races during Oktoberfest. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a historic tall ship docked along the river.
After exploring the cobbled streets and indulging in shopping and dining, take a moment to relax in Rousakis Riverfront Plaza. Watch the seagulls and people bustling about, and let the plaza be the perfect starting point or a peaceful haven to slow things down.
Come experience the vibrant history and lively atmosphere of River Street’s Rousakis Riverfront Plaza – Savannah’s most captivating destination.
