If you’re on the hunt for some great seafood, look no further than the of River Street restaurants.
It’s full of so many classic spots that it might be hard to choose, so here are some of the best of the best. Check them out to make your choice, but hey, they’re all so good you still might have to flip a coin to decide.
Vic’s On The River
Vic’s on the River is one of the higher scale restaurants on River Street. Just walk through the class doors of the cafe, take the elevator up to the dining room on the fourth floor, and be transported with a beautiful view of the river. Some of the most famous dishes here are the award winning Crawfish Beignets, the fried green tomatoes, pecan crusted flounder, and of course shrimp and grits. For dessert, be a little adventurous and try the sweet potato souffle. You’ll be glad you did. They also have a very wide wine selection with the option to buy by the glass or half bottle, and Vic’s does get busy, so it’s best to have a reservation ahead of time.
If you’re a history buff check out the preserved hand drawn map of the route of Sherman’s march through Savannah by a civil war soldier that was found on the wall of the restaurant! Located at 26 East Bay Street, or enter from East River Street.. For more info call: 912-721-1000.
Huey’s
Bringing you a little bit of New Orleans in Savannah, Huey’s has been an icons of River Street restaurants since 1987. Huey’s serves breakfast all day, so a creole omelette and world famous sweet beignets are always within reach. But if you’re looking for dinner, the oysters, gumbo, jambalaya, and award winning Bloody Mary’s are never in short supply. Located at 115 East River Street. For more info call: 912-234-7385.
Tubby’s Tank House
What first draws people to Tubby’s Tank House has to be the tables with a view. Located just above Huey’s restaurant, grab a seat on the balcony and feel the breeze roll off the river. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the most popular dishes here are the crab dip, blackened, fried, or grilled catch of the day, or the chicken cordon bleu if you feel like something off the land. The hush puppies also make a great side to any meal. For dessert, pecan pie is a must, made locally from the Savannah Candy Kitchen. Tubby’s was also featured on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food! Located at 115 East River Street. For more info call: 912-233-0770.
The Cotton Exchange
The Cotton Exchange is a great place to get away from all the hustle of River Street. Quaint and quiet, this a great restaurant for a casual night out when you don’t feel like being too overcrowded. Popular picks here are the stuffed flounder or seafood scampi, and the chowder is a must. There is also a very vast beer selection and compared to all the River Street restaurants, the prices can’t be beat. Located at 201 East River Street. For more info call: 912-352-7088.
The Shrimp Factory
A staple on River Street since 1977, The Shrimp Factory is, you guessed it, the best place for shrimp. Try the shrimp and grits or stuffed shrimp filled with blue crab. It’s also a restaurant tradition to start out every lunch with fresh blueberry muffins and honey butter, or bread and pimento cheese spread before dinner. But the biggest draw here is the famous Chatham Artillery Punch. This punch has a kick “greater than the two brass cannons presented to the Chatham Artillery by George Washington”. The punch was first made in the 1850’s, brewed in ice-filled horse buckets with sugar, lemon, and a quart each of brandy, whiskey, rum, and champagne. You also get to keep your glass as a complimentary souvenir! Located at 313 East River Street. For more info call: 912-236-4229.
Spanky’s Pizza Galley and Saloon
Open since 1976, Spanky’s is the only place to get pizza on River Street! But it’s claim to fame is the best chicken fingers in town and hand battered spuds in a sweet honey sauce. This is a great place to go to with kids who might be picky eaters. But the burgers, hot dogs, and chicken fingers are sure to please adults too, though there is also seafood and steak on the menu as well. Located at 317 East River Street. For more info call: 912-236-3009.
