Mary Flannery O’Connor (March 25, 1925 – August 3, 1964) was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist. A one of Savannah’s most admired authors, she wrote two novels and thirty-two short stories, as well as a number of reviews and commentaries. There is wide consensus that Flannery O’Connor’s childhood home is a must-see Savannah attraction if you enjoy reading, writing, Southern gothic themes, history and/or period house tours. And for the literary tourists among us? A visit is a given.

The house boasts a collection of objects Flannery used, letters she wrote, vintage decor and original antiques. The home’s docent-conducted tours receive high marks. Visitors praise the “visibly enthusiastic,” accommodating and “very hospitable” team. The docents are knowledgeable about the history of the home, its restoration and the life and career of Flannery O’Connor. The gift shop, which was previously the parlor, contains a variety of Flannery O’Connor merchandise, and they will officially emboss any book you select for purchase from their bookstore!
Flannery O’Connor was a complex woman, “a complete original,” as one reviewer put it. “Her work still packs a punch that can take the wind out of you.”
Hours are limited to 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday. So plan ahead if this is on your to-do list! Tours start on the hour, can accommodate up to 8 people. Cost $12/person, $10 for military and are free for children 10 and under. Parking consists of paid meters that run from Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please note that the home includes multiple flights of stairs, and is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
