Since 1978, Brighter Day Natural Foods Market has served as an anchor at the south end of Forsyth Park.
It provides organic produce, natural supplements, vegan items and freshly prepared food, smoothies and juices.
Although Brighter Day is a popular destination for locals, this independent, locally owned natural grocery store is also an ideal stop for visitors who would like to pack a healthy picnic to enjoy in Forsyth Park, or who want to stock up on high-quality supplements. The store is committed to founding principles of integrity, healthy living, community service and environmental sustainability.
“Brighter Day is a unique community experience that’s defined by more personal service and people who really care,” says Kristin
Russell, the owner of Brighter Day, as well as The Sentient Bean fair trade coffee shop located next door. “We’re especially passionate about opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint, support local farmers and, of course, serve great, healthy food.”
Russell and her business partner, Brad Baugh, continue the Brighter Day legacy, originally founded by Janie and Peter Brodhead more than four decades ago.
In 2019, when the Brodheads decided to retire, Russell stepped up to offer continuity and to ensure the longevity of this Savannah natural foods institution.
“I love this neighborhood and I love Brighter Day,” Russell explains. “It’s a natural fit. Both Brighter Day and Sentient Bean care deeply about environmental sustainability, connecting back to the community and supporting local farms and local growers.”
Like the Brodheads, Russell is a food activist and a supporter of organic produce. Ten years ago, she co-founded the Forsyth Farmers’ Market, which is one of most successful farmers’ markets in the Southeast. She currently serves on the board of Georgia Organics, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting organic farmers with customers across the state.
“This end of Forsyth Park is home to independent businesses focused on positive, healthy options,” Russell explains. “It’s a unique, community-oriented experience.”
