July 1-September 7: The Jepson Center presents The Moss Mystique. From 1895 through 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana, women graduates of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College’s art program took part in a commercial enterprise, painting pottery with images of flora and fauna. Tasked with representing the region through their work, Newcomb designers earned a reputation for turning to their local environment for inspiration. Newcomb Pottery received national praise for the quality of its designs and its representation of Southern regional identity.
