Compete in the River Race, the Race Across the River or take the Little Tybee Challenge during the 17th annual Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races. With three different races and several other activities, the Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races are a hit every year. The Tybee River Race spans six and a half miles on the Back River and the Little Tybee Challenge is eight miles circumnavigating part of Little Tybee Island, while the Race Across the River is a short fun race for Gold and Platinum Sponsors. Races begin at 10 a.m. and sign-in for all three races is 7:30-8:15 a.m., followed by a brief orientation.
Little Tybee Challenge racers should have rough water experience and be competent at self rescue. If you are not interested in competitive racing, but want to support the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, sign up as a casual paddler for two miles in the River Race – it’s like being a walker in a running race.
Other fun includes a Stand Up Paddleboard category in the River Race and the Little Tybee Challenge, the drawing (open to everyone) for the Perception kayak plus paddle and PFD donated by Half-Moon Outfitters, and the Awards Ceremony drawing for participants after the races.
The fee for the River Race and the Little Tybee Challenge is $45 per person or $40 for American Canoe Association members. Early registration, before Aug. 31, 2015, is $35. This event is sanctioned by the American Canoe Association. For more information, or to register for the races, go to TybeeKayakRace.org.
