Best Holiday Memories of Savannah

Joyce wrote:

A lifetime ago, on Thanksgiving Day 1961 my husband (at that time) and I arrived at the gate of what was then Hunter Air Force Base, our first assignment out of his Weather Maintanance School in Chanute AFB, IL. We had experienced our very first grits that morning somewhere south of WV. and stopped for a turkey sandwich at lunchtime in SC, I think the restaurant was called the Poinsettia.

Old Savannah City Mission's Day of Great Thanksgiving!

Wiley and Janet McCrary, Volunteer Faculty Culinary Arts Specialists to the Old Savannah City Mission, are reaching out to the food service/hospitality community in Savannah for additional help for the Day of Great Thanksgiving held every year in Forsyth Park on the Saturday before Thanksgiving (November 22, 2008). When they started volunteering two years ago, approximately 1500 meals were served. Last year it grew to an additional 2000 meals reaching 3500!

Pastor Jim Lewis, Executive Director of the Old Savannah City Mission, keeps raising the bar and anticipates serving over 4500 meals this year. This number surpasses any kind of "fire power" we have used in the past. We need your help in the areas of smoking turkeys, as well as preparing green beans, dressing, yams and dessert. This event is free to all and definitely benefits the city of Savannah.

Many thanks to those who supported us last year and we are looking forward to their continued support: Savannah Technical College, The Mansion on Forsyth Park, The Lady & Sons, Savor Savannah Catering, and The Chatham Club. If you would like to help contact Janet at (912) 695-0094.
